The ancestry of jazz is in ragtime, blues, soul, and other genres that preceded it. As a form of musical expression, it can even be traced as far back as American black slave spirituals, many of which were conceived from music and themes that date back to a time and place that has scarcely even been documented.
Now in the 21st century, the history of jazz has made a trip around the world and sired many other genres — Bosa Nova, fusion, funk, Rhythm and Blues, just to name a few. The most famous names in jazz history range from American icons like Cab Calloway, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Dizzy Gillespie, Aretha Franklin, Etta James, Billie Holiday, Charlie Mingus, Canonball Aderly, McCoy Tyner, Artie Shaw and Louis Armstrong, just to name a few.
