Jazz Music Jazzpoint
Jazz — not even baseball is American is this tradition in music. With its roots entrenched deeply in the culture of this country, jazz music is the literal and figurative soul of the Land of the Free. How ironic it is then, that what has become the measuring stick by which we gauge many other forms of expression that those who are responsible for the inception of jazz were largely oppressed and if not slaves themselves, the children and grandchildren of those who were in chattels.
When most people, especially today’s youth think of jazz, they think of airy saxophone music and cheesy scenes of “Miami Vice” reruns. They think of Lisa Simpson and the types of clubs their parents and grandparents might frequent.
Truth be known, jazz as a type of music and as a culture began in the seedy underbellies on the urban street of New York City, Chicago, Boston and largely in the Deep South. It is more than a tradition — jazz is an essential part of the American dream, perhaps it could even be considered the soundtrack of the 20th century in the United States.
